LANCE IS LOCKED

Revisiting Breakout Philippines’ Room 13 (Shangri-la Branch): A Review

Advertisements

I previously reviewed Breakout Philippines’ Room 13 here on this blog some time ago. This was the game at their first branch in Paragon Plaza, which is now closed. Breakout Philippines is now offering Room 13 at their new branch in Shangri-la Plaza Mall, though. As I was intrigued by how they would translate the game in their new space, I tried it out. The new Room 13 did not disappoint.

Room Brief:

You and your friends check in at an old motel after experiencing car troubles in the middle of nowhere and cannot call for help. But this place is giving you the creeps. Something doesn’t feel right. Your group tries to leave the room but the door knob falls off– and for some reason, you feel like it wasn’t an accident. You try to force your way out but to no luck. You are trapped inside.

Can you find a different way out or will you and your friends be trapped forever?

The Puzzles

Though some of the puzzles in the original game are still present in the new rendition, fresh puzzles are incorporated into this new version of the game. The flow of the game is slightly changed also. These are all welcome revisions.

The puzzles involved searching, attending to details, but mostly all mainly searching. It was an entertaining game that keeps every player involved. It isn’t very difficult as well.

The Set

The set is beautiful and immersing, designed in great detail and care. The first room really felt like an old motel, while the rest of the game layout felt greatly tied into the story and scenario. It was great to see that the story wasn’t only revealed in text and notes, but was brought to life by the game’s set itself. And yes, there are multiple rooms, but I won’t spoil the fun. These are details that I appreciate from Breakout.

Conclusion

I highly recommend this game. The puzzles were just the right level of difficulty and were genuinely entertaining, and the set and how players may interact with it is thrilling.

For players who haven’t tried Room 13 in the past, give it a try now. And for those who have experienced it in the past at Paragon Plaza, give it another go in their new branch. It is still greatly enjoyable as many game elements were altered for the better.

My rating: ★★★★☆
